Vitalik Buterin Believes Layer 2 Protocols Are an Integral Part of Ethereum’s Culture

Ethereum Co-Founder Vitalik Buterin Emphasizes Importance of Layer-2 Protocols

Organizational Difference Between Layer-1 And Layer-2

In his recent blog post, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin reiterated that Layer-2 protocols are like a “cultural extension of the Ethereum” network. Buterin started off by explaining the difference between Layer-1 and Layer-2 protocols, emphasizing that the most important disparity lies in their organizational structure rather than technical aspects.

According to Buterin, Layer 2-centric ecosystems have a pluralistic nature that allows for a greater diversity of approaches to scaling and technological features. He described Ethereum as a hub where developers can independently build sub-ecosystems with distinct features, transcending technology to include culture.

Ethereum Subcultures And L2s

Buterin highlighted the work of researcher Paul Dylan-Ennis, who identified three main Ethereum subcultures: Cypherpunks, Regens, and Degens. Each subculture has its own characteristics, with Cypherpunks focusing on core research and development, Regens on non-financial applications, and Degens on trading and gaming.

Layer-2 protocols, according to Buterin, provide a platform for these subcultures to engage in action, offering the opportunity for them to emerge with substantial resources. He mentioned L2s such as Optimism, MegaETH, and Starknet as examples of ecosystems organized around building something.

Ultimately, the core value proposition of the L2-centric approach to culture is its attempt to balance the benefits of pluralism and cooperation, creating a dynamic and diverse ecosystem within the Ethereum network.
