Detained Binance Executive Collapses in Nigerian High Court During Trial
On Thursday, Tigran Gambaryan, an executive at Binance, collapsed in a Nigerian High Court during a trial related to foreign exchange contravention and money laundering charges. The trial has been postponed to June 20 to allow Gambaryan to receive medical attention.
EFCC Trial Postponed
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had filed a lawsuit against Binance for money laundering and contravening tax regulations. Gambaryan collapsed in the courtroom while the trial was ongoing, prompting the judge to postpone the proceedings.
Defense Counsel Mark Mordi informed the court about Gambaryan’s health condition, stating that he is “very ill and requires comprehensive medical attention.” The trial has been rescheduled to June 20 to accommodate Gambaryan’s recovery.
Wife Pleads for Release
Gambaryan’s wife, Yuki Gambaryan, has spoken out against her husband’s detention and the conditions at the Kuje Prison where he is being held. She described the situation as “devastating” and called for his immediate release, citing his deteriorating health.
Meanwhile, Binance’s Tax Evasion trial with Nigeria’s Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has also been postponed to June 14 due to Gambaryan’s absence. The reasons for his non-appearance were not disclosed.
